Things are most
certainly starting to look up for the Witches, two wins and a draw
in the last four meetings and the loan signing of former rider
Jesper B Jensen, things aren't looking as bleak as they once were.
Add to mix the fantastic form that Robert Miskowiak has found,
Thursday evenings are now something to look forward to with a bit of
optimism.
I really believe that had the meeting on Thursday had gone ahead,
the Witches really good have provided Coventry with a real test, and
who knows maybe gained a valuable victory.
I know that the team still has some way to go to get regular good
results against the big guns in the league but they are now unbeaten
at Foxhall for over a month, that s five meetings on the bounce
where the Witches have not only just beaten the opposition but
completely thrashed them in some cases.
The signing of JBJ, a rider who knows the Foxhall track, cannot be
underestimated. As I said in a previous blog the team needs a
permanent rider to fill Mark Loram's boots, and no doubt we will see
the away meeting results pick up.
Jesper's form at Oxford was poor, but there are many rumours
circulating as to why this was, so in Jesper the Witches have a very
capable rider who will pile on the points.
The best news however, is that he wants to ride for the club, saying
himself that he turned down other British clubs to come to Foxhall,
so not only have the Witches found a superb rider, but also a
committed one who will lead from the front.
I was sad to see the Witches miss out on signing Antonio Lindback as
I see him as a quality rider, who when he finds his top form is an
asset to any team. His display at the Danish grand prix was
impressive, and give him a couple more meetings for Belle Vue and he
will be scoring heavily, but looking at the positives from missing
out on the Rio Rocket has seen the return of Jesper who is a more
consistent and an all round better rider.
The form of Robert Miskowiak is another thing that Witches fans
should be crowing about, in his past 4 meeting he has scored a total
of 45 points, and this could have been more had the Poole meeting
not been such a disaster.
Miskowiak is stepping up and getting a great example to the younger
riders in the team, also with Robert scoring well we now have at
least three consistent scorers, and now Jesper is back more points
are on the cards.
I have been impressed with some of the talent that is in the Premier
league. I was at Loomer Road when Chris Schramm and the Newport
Wasps rolled up to take on the Stoke Potters. Schramm lead the team
from the front and passed some riders who never get passed around
Loomer Road.
I was also left impressed with the reserve Michal Rajkowski, who
scored an excellent 11 from the reserve spot and has continued to
score well in recent weeks, including a 19 away from Newport. He
looks good of the gate, and on the one occasion that he missed the
start, he managed to pass both opposition riders and claim a heat
victory, this rider is certainly one to watch.
Unfortunately, the world of speedway has taken one heck of a
beating, with two deaths in two weeks, a series of major accidents
and the debacle that is Oxford speedway.
It is terrible to see riders lose their lives competing in the sport
that we love, and you can only feel for their families, and is a sad
reminder to all us moaners on the terraces, just how brave they are
to be putting their lives on the line week in week out.
Something needs to be done by the authorities to make sure that what
has happened at Oxford to occur at other tracks.
Numbers have dwindled at tracks, and this is one of the reasons why
Oxford have had to pull out of the Elite league. Whilst the sport is
thriving on the television and at international level, more needs to
be done to attract crowds to the domestic meetings.
The super7series is a fantastic idea, but that is only for the big
individual meeting, what is being done to attract the new generation
to the bread and butter of the sport?
They have a superb product to go and promote, but there just is not
enough being done to make people aware of the sport.
I recently took another first timer to speedway the other week to
watch the Witches take on Eastbourne, and he loved it, having never
seen the sport before.
The one thing that he said to me that stands out is that, he never
sees anything about speedway anywhere other than on the trailers for
Sky Sports, and he is a fellow sports journalist. So what chance to
the general public have of being introduced to the sport if, someone
who s job it is to know about all sports?
It is a tricky thing to promote to the masses, but the sport sells
itself, even more media coverage is needed to get the crowds back to
the tracks, and a way needs to be found to do this.
The grand prix threw up a surprise last week with Andreas Jonsson
Claiming the victory. He didn't make himself popular with the home
fans after a clash with Hans Anderson in the semi-final, when the
Danes chain broke.
But the Swede kept himself cool and won a difficult final.
This just shows that anyone can win a grand prix if they manage to
put in a good performance on the night, so hopes must be high for
Cardiff. Maybe a win for Scott Nicholls could be on the cards.
Just like Jonsson, Nicholls has had a poor grand prix series so far,
and with a massive home crowd behind him, anything could happen.
The rest of June sees the Witches at home to Lakeside and the
unstoppable Swindon, so lets cross our fingers and hope the home
form can continue.

therefore his views are entirely independent of the Promotion.
