Wow, what a
Grand Prix it was at Cardiff!!!!!!!!!!!
It was my first visit to Wales to watch the "circus" that is the
Grand Prix series and was treated to what many are calling the best
meeting since the inauguration of the series in 1995. Chris Harris
was awesome all night and certainly got the home crowd roaring with
glee as a first British win at Cardiff became a real possibility.
As from a British perspective. Harris passed the line in the final
it really felt as though the roof was going to be lifted off the
stadium and around me many people were delirious as the night could
not have gone better.
Even Scott Nicholls joined the party this round and finally showed
everyone what he is capable of as he scored a valuable 9 points that
lift him into the top 10 for the first time this season. Hopefully
he will be able to rise into the top eight and ensure that he is
back in the series next year.
Nicholls has came in for some stick from some sections of supporters
in speedway and many would be happy to see him drop out of the
series, but he is the Britain's top rider (although he is being
pushed very hard by Chris Harris), and has been for a few years now,
so deserves the support of the crowd.
Now that he got a positive result in Cardiff he can go on and show
the form that Nicholls is capable of, and the form that got him to
the role of the country's top rider.
I found the whole Cardiff experience a little odd, never before have
I seen so many people at a speedway event, and the setting made it
all the more surreal (I am too young to remember the days of Wembley
attracting 80,000 for the World Final), but the racing was
absolutely sensational and I am sure was helped by the electric
atmosphere.
The Witches have added another two wins to their tally this season.
The best result coming against top of the table Swindon at Foxhall
last Thursday. I have commented in previous blogs that a win against
one of the big boys in the league, the confidence that the team have
gained from those previous wins at the Heath is shining through.
It is good to see Jesper B Jensen back in a Witches race jacket, and
has scored well in his two return meetings.
He rode well against Lakeside and equally well against Swindon, a
team who are looking very strong this season and will not get beaten
many times this season, home or away.
The Witches will have had a very difficult meeting against Belle Vue
by the time you read this and hopefully celebrating a Witches
victory which will set us up for the dreaded visit to Swindon and
carry us into the quarter final cup tie with Reading later this
month.
I believe Belle Vue will be difficult to beat and by the time
Ipswich return to Kirkmanshulme Lane later this month.
It is expected that within the next few days, the Aces are to
announce a replacement for Ryan Fisher who left the club two weeks
ago.
If they manage to attract a half decent rider I think that they will
become a harder team to beat as the signing of Antonio Lindback
(maybe I should start a Lindback supporters club) has made them a
strong side and is only a matter of time before his influence in the
team starts to show.
The visit to Swindon is a fixture I am highlighting for a surprise
away win of the season. The Robins have Leigh Adams in their team
who is a GP rider, but the rest I feel are certainly beatable.
Watch out to see just how much confidence the three match unbeaten
run has produced.
It is good to see Tobi Kroner progressing through the qualifying
rounds for the 2008 Grand Prix. He finished forth in a round that
was very strong and contained Britain's Lewis Bridger and Danny King
as ex Witch Hampel.
Even if Tobi fails to qualify for the Grand Prix Series it is an
experience that can only benefit the Witches. As he is a young rider
the pressure that he will be experiencing will stand him in good
stead will it comes down to the pressure meetings he rides for the
Witches, and hopefully if the Witches qualify for the play-offs in
the next few seasons, could be the experience that wins the title
for Ipswich (I know I am getting rather ahead of myself but must
remain optimistic otherwise there is no point in going on).
As you may have guessed from my previous blogs I am a regular at
Stoke as well as Foxhall and therefore get to see the talent that is
floating around up and down the country in the Premier league.
Lee Complin is someone who is starting to impress as the season
progresses. After a couple of years where is has struggled, Lee is
starting to show what he is capable of producing.
Complin started his career at Sheffield and was touted as the next
big thing, but things didn't work out for him there and this saw him
leave the sport.
But he returned and features at number 4 for Stoke and is racking up
the points. He doesn't always make the gate but can find the right
lines and is more than capable of passing all opponents in his way.
I hope that the rumours of him returning to Sheffield next season
aren't true as he has entertained me this season and is a valuable
rider for the Potters.
As we start a new month things are looking up for the Witches and
hopefully when August comes around, we will all have a knock out cup
semi final to look forward to and a mid table position.
NB: Isaac is not
officially connected to the Promotion at Ipswich Speedway and
therefore his views are entirely independent of the Promotion.
